2008 POE SHOW CELEBRATES WRITER'S 200TH BIRTHDAY
Largest Party West of the Mississippi at The Mesa Arts Center
[Mesa]- In what has become one of the season's most anticipated art events, The 2008 8th Annual Poe Show promises to pull out all the stops for Edgar's 200th birthday celebration. Each year, in a fundraiser for local literary nonprofit Anthology, Inc., a celebration is organized commemorating the birth of the originator of the Detective (Fiction) Genre, and macabre literary master. The show will be held on Saturday, January 17th at 7:30pm at The Mesa Arts Center. Tickets are on sale now at the Art Center Website, http://www.mesaartscenter.com.
The show, believed to be the largest such show outside of Poe's "traditional" home town's of Richmond, Boston, New York or Baltimore, features some of the best local talent in the Phoenix Arts scene today, including Jeff Falk, Trish JusTrish, The Klute, Kevin Patterson and others. When asked to describe poe's legacy to our culture, artist Jeff Falk replied, "Poe's legacy in contemporary culture is unseen by most. But like the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, his and is everywhere. And like Wright, Poe's visions are a cornerstone of the very structure of genius that is the American, creative, soul."
Performances range from comedic interpretations of Poe's work, such as The Telltale Sock, a new short movie from Sharon Skinner and the Nelsonettes, to dramatic readings of his writings from such artists as Robert X Planet. Kevin Patterson, when asked of the importance of Poe in literature, responded, "I believe Poe along with Mark Twain are the two men who helped America decided define our own voice in writing and the creative arts. Before then we looked to Europe for culture and our arts were just hackneyed weak rip-offs of Europe's. Poe allowed us to address the darkness in the unknown of life. It is not surprising that a people who were unsure of what crazy things they would still find in the yet unexplored parts of the continent wondered about the unknown. Poe allows us to play with the darkness around us."
Tickets for the performance are $11, and, as always, the show is a benefit for Anthology, inc., to fund it's mission to promote the literary arts in the Valley. A complete roster of performers and additional information is available at Anthology's website, http://www.anthology.org.
Anthology, Inc. is a Greater Phoenix based literary nonprofit, recognized both by the state of Arizona and is a 501c(3) organization with the Internal Revenue Service. Founded in 1994, Anthology’s mission is to promote performance poetry and associated literary arts in the greater Phoenix community by providing opportunities for artists to perform their work and by making spoken word arts accessible to a diverse audience.
